Dr. Aitken's interest is in the design and development of health systems in developing countries. This has developed during extensive periods of time involved in the design and implementation of primary health care systems in Papua New Guinea and West Africa, and more recent involvement with programs in South Asia and Kenya. A complementary interest has been in the training of different kinds of rural health workers and the development of management training programs for health administrators. Reproductive health care is his main focus. Much of this has been concerned with the development of effective systems for obstetric care in developing countries.
